A mother-son duo were inches away from winning the highest amount of money ever scored on a British gameshow, after racking up an impressive £1,200,000 on Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win.
The season two finale of Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s ITV competition saw Tracey-Jane and Troy Beaumont from Liverpool take on the ladder, and before they even began, the pair received a surprise gift.
After declaring themselves as Doctor Who fans, with Tracey-Jane sharing a sweet story of Troy asking for a David Tennant birthday cake when he was younger, the Doctor himself appeared in a video message to wish them luck.
And adding comedy to the adorable message, David appeared with a cake with Troy’s face on it – which he happily indulged in.
Things weren’t so happy when it came to playing the game though, as after tense rounds the players climbed their way up the ladder to £1,200,000.
The life-changing sum wasn’t just the highest seen on the ITV competition, but it was actually the highest amount of money won by anyone on a gameshow in Britain.
However, Tracey-Jane and Troy missed out by the skin of their teeth, as they eventually ran out of lives.
Along the way, the players managed to guess how many letters were in the world ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, talk themselves out of knowing how many dots were on a domino tile, and use Ant and Dec’s help in oven-chips knowledge.
However, at the final hurdle, Tracey-Jane and Tony lost out on the huge sum, but went home with their heads held high.
Viewers at home were heartbroken meanwhile, with one writing: ‘That was absolutely brutal to watch! So cruel to be so close to that amount of money and not being able to bank it!’
Another penned: ‘Absolutely gutted for you!! That was unreal..’
‘To be fair, I don’t think I’d know my own name, let alone any general knowledge, if I’d had a video message from David Tennant,’ one person joked.
Meanwhile over on his Twitter, Troy commented: ‘I got to meet Ant and Dec, David Tennant ate a cake with my face on it and we made TV history. We might have lost, but I feel like a winner.’
Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win is available to watch on ITVX.
